Watch as firefighters get pelted with missiles in County Durham as they tackle blaze

Firefighters have released footage of crew members being pelted with missiles as they tackled a blaze in Hetton-le-Hole.

A team from Rainton Bridge Community Fire Station were called to five wheelie bins that had been set alight in an underpass near Eskdale Street on Friday night.

But while they were trying to put out the blaze, people nearby started throwing missiles at them.

The fire was extinguished but a video taken by one of the crew members shows the attack and one of the objects can be heard striking a firefighter's helmet.

A spokesperson from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "Just before 9.30 on Friday night, firefighters from Rainton Bridge Community Fire Station were called to five wheelie bins that had been set alight in an underpass near Eskdale Street, Hetton-le-Hole.

"While they were dealing with the incident, missiles were thrown at them. In this video, you can hear one of the missiles hit a firefighter's helmet.

"Thankfully no one was hurt, but firefighters should not have to face attacks and abuse while they're working to keep people safe. Sadly, this is happening regularly in this particular area."
