Watch as Fife river bursts its banks amid widespread flooding across Scotland

Dramatic footage shows the moment the River Leven burst its banks as gushing flood water wreaked havoc in Fife yesterday.

Persistent downpours caused chaos with flood alerts issued for coastal towns Leven and nearby Methil.

The whole of Scotland's east coast and central belt was deluged by heavy rain on Friday, reports the Daily Record.

Video shows churning water from the River Leven engulfing everything in its path.

Flooding was reported across East Lothian as locals posted images on social media of swamped land.

And in Dundee locals were advised to avoid the area after the Dighty Burn burst its banks at Trottick Ponds.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) had issued six flood warnings across the north east and on the Scottish border for Friday.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for Fife, Dundee, Angus, Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire between 10.30am and 3pm today.

Flooding in homes and businesses, as well as potential travel disruption to bus and train services was predicted before stunned locals shared their concerns on social media at the heavy rain which buffeted Fife throughout the day.

On Saturday morning one lane of the A82 at Dunglass Roundabout near Milton was closed off due to flooding and SEPA has warned further showers over Eastern Scotland are on the way today, with snow expected on higher ground.

A spokesperson said: "Flooding of small watercourses and low-lying roads is possible.

"Alerts and warnings have been issued. Please take care when making essential journeys."
