Watch as cars engulfed by waves as Storm Elsa ravages Salthill, Galway city

This footage shows cars being engulfed by a high tide as Storm Elsa winds continue to batter the west coast of Ireland.

The video appears to show vehicles submerged in water as winds as strong as 120km/h bash Salthill, near Galway city.

In the clip, uploaded by The Door Centre on Wednesday night, cars can be seen caught up in flood surges.

It comes as a Status Orange wind warning for Galway and Mayo was issued by Met Eireann.

Galway City Council also warned motorists to take care as several trees were reported to have fallen on roads.

A tweet said: "Trees down:on Dublin Rd at Galway Crystal; Ballymoneen Road - covering the entire road; Across Barna Woods on Barna Road - Road partially blocked; Taylors Hill at Ardilaun Hotel.

"Do not venture outdoors unless absolutely necessary."

The second Status Orange wind warning was issued as 120km/h gusts hit the west coast.

Met Eireann put the weather alert in place for Mayo and Galway, while the same caution for Cork expired.

The warning became valid at 9pm on Wednesday and will be in place until 1am on Thursday.

A spokesman said: "Strong southerly winds, veering southwest will reach mean speeds of 65 to 80km/h with gusts up to 120km/h for a short time tonight."

Meanwhile, the rest of the country is on yellow alert as wind gusts as strong as up to 110km/h are expected to hit.

The nationwide Status Yellow wind warning, which came into effect at 12pm on Wednesday, will be valid until 3am on Thursday.
