Watch as bomb experts detonate grenade found in garage near Bristol

Bomb disposal experts were called to a village near Bristol to detonate a wartime grenade found in a garage.

It is understood the homeowner was clearing the garage at the property at Sawyers Close in Wraxall when he stumbled across the grenade yesterday afternoon.

Police were called who alerted the Explosive Ordnance Unit who collected the grenade and took it to neighbouring fields to detonate it.

It is understood that the grenade may have dated back to World War Two.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “An historic grenade, possibly dating back to the Second World War, was located in a garage in Sawyers Close, Wraxall, on Saturday afternoon.

“The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit attended and took the grenade away to be safely disposed of.”

This is the second time an unexploded grenade has been found in the village in recent months.

Last month a grenade was found in a garden of a property at Belmont Hill and taken to nearby woods by bomb experts to detonate.

It is understood the grenade was American in origin.

Large parts of Wraxall’s Tyntesfield Estate were used during the Second World War by American soldiers.

It was used for a transit camp for as many as 1,500 soldiers stopping off on their way to fight in Europe, as well as a military hospital.

Between 1943-44, many American training camps sprung up around Bristol, with more than 20 in North Somerset alone.

As a result, the Americans needed many hospitals to care for their casualties and the Tyntesfield estate was used as a location.
