Smoke billowed over Hamilton Town Centre last night (July 30) as a bin shed caused a huge blaze in the area.

Emergency services were called to Lamb Street in the town after reports of a fire outside Exercise4Less Gym, which is based in the New Cross Centre.

Customers at the gym evacuated for roughly an hour as the fire spread to the side panel of the building.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We were alerted at 5.56pm on Monday, July 29 to reports of a fire involving outdoor bins at Lamb Street, Hamilton.

“Operations Control mobilised two fire appliance to the scene, where crews extinguished the fire and ensured the area was safe.

“There were no casualties, and crews left at 7.24pm.

A spokesperson for Exercise4Less said: “We were evacuated yesterday for roughly one hour, just to make sure it was absolutely safe for our customers. We are open today as usual.”
