Watch as army installs 700 metres of emergency flood defences in Ilkley

The army have been drafted in to install emergency flood defences in parts of Ilkley which are at serious risk of flooding.

Storm Dennis is forecast to batter West Yorkshire with gale-force winds and torrential downpours this weekend, just a few days after Storm Ciara caused devastation across the region.

In a bid to protect homes and businesses, troops have deployed to Ilkley.

Rows and rows of temporary floodgates arrived in the Denton Road area on the back of lorries before the troops unloaded them and began forming an impenetrable wall infront of some of the most vulnerable properties in the town.

Hundreds of sandbags are also being laid to minimise the impact of the floodwaters.

Oliver Harmar, Yorkshire director for the Environment Agency, tweeted a video of army personnel who have spent the day installing hundreds of metres of flood defences in the town.

He said: "Lots of activity in Ilkley right now as the military are helping @EnvAgencyYNE deploy temporary flood defences to bolster protection along River Wharfe as Storm Dennis approaches. Big thanks to everyone helping."

He also tweeted pictures of the troops in Ilkley and said: "The Environment Agency & partners are working around the clock across Yorkshire."
