Watch as anti-mask campaigner's sign is snatched during Newcastle protest

This is the moment an anti-mask campaigner had their sign snatched during a protest in Newcastle.

Footage posted on Twitter, which you can watch above, shows a masked female grabbing the sign near Grey's Monument before making a run for it.

Onlookers told ChronicleLive that up to 50 people - including children - gathered there on Saturday afternoon to campaign against new mask rules.

"They were all taking turns, sharing the same mic, chanting stop the Government controlling us," claimed Emma Cryer, who uploaded the clip.

She added that campaigners were chanting that the masks were "stopping our children having an education".

Emma added: "They were confrontational to people who tried to suggest what they were protesting was wrong, like getting up in this guys face shouting waving their arms around."

However, the protest took a twist when the female grabbed the sign, which Emma claimed had the word 'nonsense' written in red.

Current Government rules, designed to stop coronavirus spreading, mean police can fine people £100 if they refuse to wear masks in shops while they are also compulsory on public transport.

On Saturday, more attractions - including cinemas and bingo halls - were added to the list of venues where masks must be worn.

Some people, including very young children and those with relevant health issues, are exempt.
