Watch as an Edinburgh e-surfer travels to infamous The Bass Rock

An Edinburgh man has become the first person to visit the Bass Rock off of North Berwick by using an Efoil surfboard.

Duncan Purves, who was born in Edinburgh, was on a family holiday when he decided that he would take a jaunt out to the popular wildlife attraction that lies just off the coast of North Berwick.

Duncan is the director of London Foils, and says that the journey took him around 30 minutes, as he glided across the surface of the water.

On his experience he said: “Having seen how impressive the Bass Rock looks from the Shore many times over the years I’d always been intrigued about what it’s like up close. I’d brought the Lift board with me to North Berwick which got me thinking how exhilarating it would be to travel out to see it on the Efoil .

“I first checked in with a couple of local sailors about the weather and tidal conditions before setting off from the beach by the Harbour. Conditions were pretty fair and as the Efoil travels above the water, the light choppy water wasn’t a problem and I made it out there in around 15 minutes.

“With the adrenaline flowing and heart pumping, taking in the view up close of the sheer white cliff sides, ancient castle, lighthouse and 10’s of 1000’s of nesting gannets was absolutely jaw dropping and one I won’t forget in a hurry.

“Whilst returning to the mainland, with the mini adventure in the bag, and a huge smile on my face, thoughts were soon developing with what other natural wonders could be taken in via this unique mode of transport. The possibilities are endless.”

The Bass Rock is home to over 150,000 gannets and has been described by Sir David Attenborough as “one of the 12 wildlife wonders of the world.”

The journey took around half an hour. (London Foil.)

The Lift 3 efoil is an electric hydrofoil surfboard and is believed to be the world’s smallest personal watercraft.

Those who choose to take to the water via Efoil will be able to experience a ride time of around 120 minutes and can expect to reach speeds as high as 30 miles per hour.

However, the surfboard does come at a cost with the market rate set at around £12,000.
