Watch as a 'waterfall' of rain pours into Leeds Costco store and customers evacuated

This was the scene at a local Costco store in Leeds on Monday night, following hours of torrential rain in the city.

The huge downpour was apparently too much for the roof of Costco in Hunslet, as a video shows what has been described as a "waterfall" of rain pouring into the warehouse.

Shopper Lucy Fawcett, who captured the video, said: "You could just hear the rain start to get really heavy, then the next moment I could feel something dripping above me. Then it just starting pouring with rain.

"I looked next to me and it was like a waterfall running in a straight line through the store. It was soaking all the books so the staff starting rushing to move them out of the way, but some of the staff just gave up because it was pouring in that much."

Staff at the Leathley Road warehouse can be seen frantically trying to move merchandise out of the way of the deluge in the video above, after water quickly flooded the floor.

The torrent of water broke through the ceiling at around 7.30pm on Monday, August 17 and Lucy said that she was in the "wrong place at the wrong time".

She said: "Staff started shouting for people to go to the tills because the amount of water on the floor was becoming dangerous.

"Unfortunately I was in the wrong place at the wrong time when it started, ending up with very wet feet!"

One member of staff appears to have accepted their fate, as they can be seen in the video walking back and forth through the shower in dripping wet clothes.

With so much water pouring onto the concrete floor, it is no surprise that the volume in the warehouse was very loud - with some people seen holding their fingers to their ears to drown out the din.

Lucy said that the store had to close early due to the indoor weather event. She said: "Some of the staff at the front of the store where oblivious as to what had happened.

"As I was leaving they had closed the doors and were turning people away. But the lady on the till told me this wasn't the first time it has happened."

The heavy rain continued into this morning and the Met Office says that the wet weather will start to ease off around midday.

LeedsLive has attempted to contact Costco to find out if the store has since reopened.
