Newcastle United’s post-match press conference got heated as Steve Bruce clashed with a reporter.
Morning reports claimed there had been disagreements between the manager and Allan Saint-Maximin over the winger’s fitness, which prompted angry exchanges in the post-match press conference.
Bruce had insisted that there was no problem with Saint-Maximin . “He was a doubt - then there was nonsense there was a fallout in a newspaper. I don’t know where that came from,” he said.
“He didn’t train Sunday as we were wary for him, and you have to be careful after two hamstring injuries. He was sore on Thursday.
“That made my mind up to not risk him. He trained well on Monday and declared himself fit.”
United won the game 3-2 after a Miguel Almiron double was followed by a Valentino Lazaro goal. West Brom scored twice in the second half to tee up a nervy finish but they hung on to make it into the last eight of the competition.
The post-match press conference saw Bruce admit that the comeback was typical United but when he was asked about the situation with Saint-Maximin, he went on the attack. You can watch the video above.
