Watch: An emotional day for vendors as historic fruit and vegetable market in Smithfield closes its doors

We paid a visit to the historic fruit and vegetable market as it closed its doors today.

It is an especially emotional day for its vendors who have worked there for decades as it is the end of an era for the Victorian market.

Ciaran Butler, who started working at the iconic market in 1985, said: “It is an emotional day to be honest with you.

“And y’know the ghosts of this market have been going through my head all night so it is a sad day.”

Vendors walked us through their fondest memories of working at the Smithfield market which first opened in 1982.

The redbrick building is currently owned by Dublin City Council who hope to transform the location into a new commercial space similar to the English Market in Cork or Belfast’s St George’s Market.
