WATCH: Alex Smith’s wife shares workout video to celebrate QBs 36th birthday

Just over a week after his ESPN E:60 documentary “Project 11” debuted, we’re getting a new look at the incredible recovery of former Chiefs QB Alex Smith. On Nov. 18 of 2018, Smith suffered a gruesome injury. Doctors would later discover a compound and spiral fracture in his leg. What appeared to initially be fairly routine surgery quickly became a race to save Smith’s leg and life after infection struck.

Today, on Smith’s 36th birthday, his wife Elizabeth shared a message on Instagram showing appreciation for her husband. Attached to the message she shared an awe-inspiring video of Smith working out. She also provided insight into his determination to play football again.

“Happy Happy Birthday to this handsome, hard working man,” Elizabeth wrote. “The last week we’ve been overwhelmed with love, support and sweet messages. We cannot thank you enough. #project11 was a look into what the last 18 months have been (mostly Alex refusing to give up). I am in awe of his perseverance every day. He just keeps getting stronger and refuses to give up… ”

To see Smith running, going through footwork drills, dropping back and throwing passes is nothing short of remarkable. How far he has come in his recovery and rehab should serve as an inspiration to others going through similar injury-related hardships. There’s still work to be done to reach his ultimate goal, but he should be very proud of what he’s achieved in such little time.
