Dickensian is set in the fictional realms of many of Charles Dickens’ novels, mashing together favourite characters such as Scrooge, Fagin and Miss Havisham in new stories, as their lives intertwine in 19th-century London.

The 20-part BBC drama is written by Tony Jordan (EastEnders) and stars Tuppence Middleton, Sophie Rundle, Omid Djalili, Stephen Rea, Pauline Collins, Caroline Quentin, Peter Firth, Anton Lesser, Ned Dennehy, Adrian Rawlins and Tom Weston-Jones.

• Dickensian begins on BBC1 at 7pm on Boxing Day with a second episode at 8.30pm.
