Wasteland behind Edinburgh Lidl 'set alight' as smoke billows over store

Thick smoke could be seen billowing over an Edinburgh Lidl on Sunday (May 15) after an area of wasteland was set alight.

Images taken surrounding the West Granton Road store showed a collection of rubbish and materials on fire as the blaze took hold behind the building.

Becoming visible at around 7pm, the flames appeared to be reaching a substantial height before emergency services were alerted to the incident.

Quickly becoming a substantial fire, one eye witness told Edinburgh Live that they had spotted a group of youngsters surrounding the area next to the wasteland.

Contacting the emergency services, Ryan Walker, 37, said: “I was walking home from the gym and as I walked past the Lidl I saw a gang of youths congregating in the waste grounds surrounding the store.

"There was thick black smoke bellowing from behind. I walked down to investigate the fire and as I made my way down the youths dispersed.

"As soon as I seen the extent of the blaze I contacted the fire brigade.”

Edinburgh Live has contacted the Scottish Fire and Rescue service for comment.
