'Waste water' leaks from upstairs toilet on to tables at Wetherspoon pub

Customers and staff at a Wetherspoon pub were left shocked when an upstairs toilet started leaking through the roof this week. The incident happened at The Cricketers in Ipswich, Suffolk, on Monday.

Pub bosses said "waste water" trickled down a window and splashed on to a small number of tables on the ground floor. Staff and customers reportedly fled the pub, reports Metro.

One woman who claimed to have been there at the time posted on social media: "The ceiling literally has fell through with human poo on somebody and even the staff was gagging and coming outside!" Another wrote: "Someone was eating their dinner when suddenly they got covered in toilet waste when the ceiling collapsed."

More witnesses said they "couldn't describe" the "grim" smell. The pub was closed overnight following the drama.

A spokesperson for JD Wetherspoon said: "The incident was an isolated issue caused by a pipe bursting while contractors were on site undertaking routine, planned, descaling works to the pipework servicing the staff toilet. The issue was confined to one (or possibly two) tables at the front of the pub as waste water leaked down the window from the toilets above."

Despite this, the pub's toilets were formally rated as some of the finest in the country just 10 months ago. The "clean and well-maintained" facilities won a platinum accolade at the Loo of the Year Awards 2021 after a glowing review by undercover teams.
