Waste management firm McCarthy Marland expands following major acquisition deal

An independent South West waste management company has agreed a multi-million-pound deal to acquire a Portsmouth-based demolition contractor.

McCarthy Marland, which is headquartered at Almondsbury Business Park in Bristol, has acquired Hughes and Salvidge Holdings, owner of Aasvogel Skip Hire and Valley Trading.

The move will see McCarthy Marland more than double its turnover to over £18m, the company said, and increase the amount of waste it handles as well as its recycling percentages and sustainability.

The purchase of Wantage-based Aasvogel Skip Hire and Tetbury-based Valley Trading will further expand McCarthy Marland’s geographical reach across the M4 and M5 corridors.

The deal will see McCarthy Marland's workforce rise by more than 60% to 130 employees. The existing leadership teams of both Aasvogel Skip Hire and Valley Trading will remain in place.

Alex Marland, director of McCarthy Marland, said: “The acquisition of both Aasvogel Skip Hire and Valley Trading represents a significant step forward in McCarthy Marland’s journey. These are exciting times as we enhance and expand our offering across the region, strengthen our position within the waste management sector and accelerate our overall growth."

McCarthy Marland now runs waste collection services and recycling facilities across Bristol, Bath, Somerset, Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire. Subsidiary company Westcombe Waste, which McCarthy Marland acquired in 2017, also operates a landfill site in Somerton, in Somerset.

Kevin McCarthy, founder and director of McCarthy Marland, added: “This acquisition will enable us to greatly enhance the extraction of recyclable material from the waste we handle and provide the ability for our clients to effectively track it from an ESG perspective.”

Shawbrook Bank supported the refinancing of McCarthy Marland to allow the acquisition.
