THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: More study material on inculcating a sense of the need for maintaining cleanliness of surroundings and scientifically disposing wastes will be included in the school curriculum by considering the current realities, general education minister V Sivankutty said in the assembly on Friday.
Replying to a calling attention in this regard by Eldhos P Kunnappallil, the minister said that already several lessons on the subject have been included in the Science, Social Science and Malayalam textbooks.
A portion on how rivers of the state are facing pollution has been included in the social science textbook of the fifth standard, while in the sixth standard textbook, the subject of waste disposal, along with discussions on vermicompost, bio-manure, biogas plant etc., have been included, Sivankutty said.
Similarly, environmental pollution, sustainable farming, global warming and methods to reduce them, public health and waste in public places, the need for nature conservation, etc., have also been discussed in various textbooks in the eighth, ninth and 10th standard textbooks, he said. Nevertheless, the new curriculum committee will include more such subjects when it is reviewed, Sivankutty assured the assembly.
