Waste disposal officers use 'unique markers' to trace illegal rubbish dumped by fly-tipping van

A van has been seized and crushed after an investigation found it had been used to fly-tip waste.

Waste disposal officers launched the investigation into a Ford Transit van after it was spotted parked up and full of refuse on Attwood Street in Longsight earlier this year.

The van, which was marked with "scrap metal" in large letters, was found to have been adapted specifically to carry waste.

Suspicious officials decided to place a unique marker on the waste stored inside the van in order to track where it ended up.

Amongst a large amount of waste found fly-tipped on Parry Road, officials found the marked rubbish alongside other waste which was believed to have come from the same vehicle.

On July 12, officials seized the vehicle was seized and wrote to the registered owner of the vehicle.

With no response and further checks confirming that the person was not registered at the address provided by the DVLA, officials decided to destroy the vehicle on November 6.

Executive Member for Neighbourhoods, Councillor Rabnawaz Akbar, said: “This is one of the ways in which we can crack down on fly-tippers, as we have the power to seize vehicles when there's evidence they have been used to carry out these offences.

“We urge all residents to ensure that they use the waste disposal services provided for free by the council, or a licensed waste carrier only - any bona fide operators will be able to provide documentation proving their status

"If the service offered by a ‘man with a van’ on social media is so cheap that it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.”

Officials say the van is the third vehicle in Manchester to be crushed this year.

Earlier this year, it was reported that waste contractors received 27,940 requests during a 12-month period to legally remove fly-tipping from areas across Manchester.

The statistics, released as part of a Waste Recycling and Street Cleansing Update by Manchester City Council, revealed that Harpurhey, Gorton and Levenshulme were the areas of Manchester with the most requests for official fly-tipping removal.
