A North West provider of collection and disposal services for the farming and meat production sectors has unveiled a new £15m processing facility in Widnes.
SecAnim has unveiled its animal by-product (ABP) processing facility at its renewable energy and recycling site on Desoto Road, with the world-first operation set to be commissioned in October.
Philip Simpson, commercial director at SARIA – parent company of SecAnim, said: “Our Widnes operation has provided safe and secure ABP processing services since the 1930s. We are delighted to unveil the culmination of our site redevelopment programme, which creates a completely unique, fully-integrated, state-of-the-art solution for by-products arising from the food chain.
“Representing a total recent investment at Widnes of almost £50 million, the facility sets the standards in capability, efficiency and sustainability.
"Indeed, no other single operation in the UK can deliver similar benefits.”
Once operational, the plant will turn raw material into high-quality tallow - a core ingredient for the production of biodiesel, as well as meat and bone meal, providing fuel for the site’s biomass plant.
Adopting state-of-the-art automation and health and safety processes and odour elimination, the facility will use the latest technological advances to maximise operational efficiencies.
It will be designed to minimise environmental impact, and use significantly less energy than the operation it replaces, and is powered entirely by renewable electricity generated through the rendering process.
Operating alongside the site’s existing anaerobic digestion plant, Category 3 rendering facility and bubbling fluidised bed power plant, the new facility will allow the site to provide the world’s first fully-integrated solution for protein manufacturing, biomass recycling and renewable energy production.
