Waste collectors end day’s strike after talks with Chandigarh Municipal Corporation

CHANDIGARH: Door-to-door garbage collectors went on strike on Monday, leading to waste piling up near the gates of houses of people in different sectors. In some areas, vehicles even came to collect garbage according to their schedule, but were stopped by the association of door-to-door garbage collectors.

The collectors alleged the municipal corporation had not fulfilled the conditions of memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between it and their association. However, late in the evening, the association leaders held a meeting with the municipal commissioner Anindita Mitra and MC officers and both parties arrived at a consensus.

“We have agreed to fulfil the genuine demands of the door-to-door garbage collectors and they will be implemented soon,” said Anindita Mitra.

After the meeting with MC officers, Om Parkash Saini, the president of the association told TOI, “The strike was started on Monday and door-to-door garbage collecting vehicles were not allowed to move in their areas. But during a meeting in the evening with the MC officers, they agreed to our demands. From Tuesday, garbage will be lifted on time. The strike has ended.”

Charanjeev Singh, president, Federation of Sectors Welfare Association of Chandigarh (FOSWAC) said, “In this tussle between the MC and door-to-door garbage collectors, residents of the city are the real suffers. The civic body has miserably failed to handle the door-to-door garbage collection through twin-bin vehicles since its launch. Leave the strike of Monday’s, garbage collectors don’t come on regular basis in routine also.”
