'Wasn't the answer' - Nottingham Forest fans react to striker's Twitter rant

Earlier today Ex- Nottingham Forest   forward Pierre van Hooijdonk took to Twitter to vent at former colleagues who have spoken out about the striker's actions during the 1998/1999 season.

The ex-Forest striker has disagreed with the recount of the story told as part of The Athletic's 'Rebooted' series - a retelling of the 98/99 football season.

The particular tale - retold by Craig Armstrong, Dougie Freeman and Steve Chettle - focuses on a dressing room spat between players - something which the forward believes wasn't told straight by his old team-mates.

"Even though I was 22, Pierre still classed me as a young kid, I think. When he came back, in the dressing room, I remember saying to him, ‘Pierre, you have been out of order.’ recounted  Armstrong to The Athletic.

"He said that I only had something to say now because I was playing. I told him I would have been happier had the squad not been decimated and had he not made himself unavailable. I said, ‘I understand why you did what you did but I don’t agree with it.’"

Hooijdonk himself isn't happy with that account though.

"They all had the chance in 98, and when I arranged a meeting only Geoff Thomas said he disagreed with it,all the others who are talking in recent years didn’t say a thing or took actions," he said on Twitter.

"And why didn’t appear one story about me from the foreigners who were part of the squad in that year??? Probably not interesting cause that’s maybe not what the people in England want to read," he added.

Brian: All the team shared the frustrations - unilateral action by an individual is not a strike - it is letting down your team mates.

Chuck: Fair play, Pierre.

Richard Ottaway: So imagine walking out your workplace saying none of your colleagues were good enough to keep the company afloat, and then you try and come back.

Austin Murphy: Selling Campbell was a stupid , huge mistake. PVH only made it worse and crippled the best team ever to be promoted, that was soon decimated. This undoubtedly changed the fate of this once great club.

Jonathan: Irrespective of the players reaction at that meeting, in hindsight, do you still think you were right to strike Pierre?

Stuart: Agreed with the principal, but not the strike, but what a player he was, superb to watch! Past is the past, it’s done.

Brian: All the team shared the frustrations - unilateral action by an individual is not a strike - it is letting down your team mates.

Nick: There’s no doubt your reasons were correct. But striking wasn’t the answer. Sorry.

Joss: You were right to be frustrated, the supporters were too. But imagine what your career could have done with a season in the Premier League smashing in 10 freekicks and 5 pens plus whatever you bagged.

Kevin Smedley: He let the club and himself down it's as simple as that!!
