'Wasn't good enough' - Notts County boss Neal Ardley's verdict on York City defeat

Notts County boss Neal Ardley says their performance against York City “wasn’t good enough” but admitted he he learned a great deal from the 3-0 defeat.

The Magpies put in an awful performance in their final game of pre-season having been 2-0 down at the break following goals from Akil Wright and Jake Cassidy.

Notts marginally improved after half-time, but they conceded another poor goal to Alex Wollaton to seal a convincing win for the Minstermen.

With the National League set to kick-off next weekend, it was a poor performance ahead of the curtain-raiser and Ardley said it told him a great deal.

“It wasn’t good enough, we know that,” he said.

“It’s easy to get really angry about it, but in the same vein it’s told me a lot I needed to know.

“It’s hard when we could not play any league teams in pre-season so you work your friendlies and make sure the last two are tough.

“We did that last season and lost both on a double-barrelled weekend.

“It tells you a lot about where you are.

“York were the perfect game for that. They are expecting to win their league and they could be a top 12 team in ours.

“I’ve learned a lot. The players had their chat before I even went in the dressing room, so they know as well.

“For some of the new lads who have come in it’s a bit of  a ‘welcome to what’s going to happen’.”
