Washington (0-0) vs. Eastern Washington (0-0) Game Preview
Why Eastern Washington Will Win
Nine starters and six of the top seven Washington defenders had to be replaced, and it’s going to be pushed by the Eastern Washington offensive machine.
It might have lost a slew of key parts from the offensive side, but the quarterback situation is solid – even with Gage Gubrud off to Washington State – with Eric Barriere returning along with promising sophomore Gunner Talkington. The attack should be able to pressure a Washington defense that will be fantastic again, but might just need a little bit of time to get all the new starters in place.
The program has given past Washington teams problems. Yeah, it might have been 2011 and 2014, but both games – two Husky wins – were big-time fights. This Eastern Washington team coming off an FCS national championship appearance is still going to be really, really good.
Why Washington Will Win
Eastern Washington is still going to be really, really good … after it gets a few games under its belt with 13 new starters.
The Eagles play fast, but that also means they don’t do much to control the clock, and that’s going to be a massive problem.
All eyes will be on new starting QB Jacob Eason, but the offense should be able to pound away and keep pounding. The attack that led the Pac-12 in time of possession should be able to keep the ball for at least five more minutes than EWU – the Washington defense will get all the rest it needs.
What’s Going To Happen
Washington is about to have a strange first three games, dealing with the high-powered offenses of Eastern Washington and Hawaii around the Pac-12 opener against a defensive-minded Cal team.
The Dawgs will be just fine. This game will be a fantastic opening act before having to shift gears against the Bears.
Eason might not be lights-out, but he’ll be efficient and effective against an EWU secondary that’s replacing three starters. The UW defense will get carved up on a few drives – the Eagle offense will be that good – but the other side of the ball will control the line, the clock, and the tempo.
In each of the last four seasons, Washington has allowed seven points or fewer against the FCS team on the slate. Eastern Washington put up 52 in a loss five years ago. That’s not going to happen, but it’s not going to be a totally dominant performance by the defending Pac-12 champion.
