Washington (2-1) vs. BYU (2-1) Game Preview

Why Washington Will Win

This is when the Huskies get physical.

Utah got tough in the opener against the BYU defensive front and won without a problem. Tennessee’s ground game can’t do anything, but it managed to rumble for 242 yards on the Cougars.

USC was stopped, and it couldn’t put the game away last week in the overtime loss in Provo. Washington won’t have the same issues.

It’s been a balanced attack so far with Jacob Eason overcoming a mediocre day against Cal to rip through Hawaii without a problem, and this week on the road the Huskies will do a little bit of everything. It starts with an offensive line that’s doing a good enough job of controlling things – at least it did against Eastern Washington and Hawaii.

This should be a workmanlike performance without a whole lot of fuss. Pound away for the running game, get Eason into an early rhythm, keep the chains moving. There’s no BYU pass rush so everyone will have time to work, and that’s all Eason needs. The Cougars picked off USC’s Kevon Slovis three times – Eason won’t make the big mistakes.

Why BYU Will Win

Washington isn’t doing too much to get into the backfield, either.

BYU QB Zach Wilson hasn’t been on the move too often, but he’s been effective and efficient after the opener against Utah. He settled down to start pushing the ball down the field a bit more in the last two games, but without any picks.

The running game won’t consistently work on the Huskies – the linebackers will bottle up Wilson if he tries to take off – but the midrange passing game will be effective enough to at least go on a few good drives. It’s up to the defense to take care of things outside of that.

How did Cal pull off the upset? It got the defense off the field in a hurry, and it was a -2 in turnover margin. BYU has to force the big plays and Wilson has to take advantage of every opportunity.

Somehow, the Cougars have to go against type and control the time of possession – they can’t let the Washington offensive line spend the game hammering away.

What’s Going To Happen

Washington’s offensive line is going to spend the game hammering away.

There’s not going to be anything aesthetically pleasing about this game. Washington will do what USC couldn’t and grind a bit, and it’s not going to screw up once it gets the game in hand.

The BYU offense will come out hot before going into a major mid-game drought when nothing works. The Huskies won’t get too comfortable, but they’ll make the Cougars press in the second half.
