Washington strips Dwayne Haskins of captaincy, fines him $40K for COVID-19 violation

The Washington Football Team is handling Dwayne Haskins’ punishment for his nightclub incident internally, but one part of the discipline is to take away his captaincy status. Ron Rivera announced on Wednesday that Haskins is no longer a team captain. Haskins was voted a captain by his teammates for the first time before the season began, a title he’ll no longer carry in Washington.

In addition to being removed as a captain, Haskins was fined $40,000 for his actions, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. He violated COVID-19 protocol on Sunday night after Washington’s loss to the Seahawks, partying at a nightclub without wearing a mask.

Rivera told reporters Wednesday that he’s talked to Haskins five or six times in the last two days after the team was made aware of the incident Monday. He no longer wants to discuss the matter, however, saying it’s been “dealt with.”

As for Sunday’s game against the Panthers, Rivera said Haskins will get the start if Alex Smith is unable to play. Smith was limited Wednesday and his status for Sunday’s game is unclear.
