Washington Street in Cork city closed after partial building collapse at construction site

A busy street in Cork city centre has been closed to traffic after part of a building collapsed in the early hours of this morning.

Cork City Fire Brigade rushed to the scene after part of a construction site caved in on Washington Street.

A stretch between the Washington Inn and Razors Barbers was sectioned off from around 3am and remains closed this morning, Cork Beo reports.

Workers are currently awaiting an engineer to assess the situation and advise further.

It's expected to remain closed for at least the next few hours.

Two units from the city's fire service attended last night and cleared the area to make sure everyone was safe.

An aerial platform was used to closely inspect the damage before it was decided to leave the area closed off into the morning.

They said: "Crews from Anglesea Street, Ballyvolane and a third officer are currently in attendance at a partial building collapse on Washington Street in the city centre.

"Avoid the area, road is closed off to public access."
