Washington State (3-2) vs. Arizona State (4-1) Game Preview
Why Washington State Will Win
This isn’t an explosive enough Arizona State offense to worry too much. Scoring on the ASU defense is a big problem, but with two weeks off, this is when the Wazzu passing game has to work.
Anthony Gordon was ripping everything apart over the first four weeks – throwing for 420 yards or more – and then the Cougars stalled in the 38-13 loss to Utah.
It’s possible to throw on Arizona State. Michigan State’s Brian Lewerke threw for close to 300 yards, and Colorado’s Steven Montez bombed away for 337 yards and three scores in a deadly accurate performance.
The Sun Devils bend but don’t often break, but they’ll bend a whole lot – Gordon has to be on with his third down passes. ASU’s secondary isn’t coming up with picks – getting just two so far – and Gordon has had a wee problem lately giving the ball away.
Get up early, make ASU push the offense, and hope it can’t.

Why Arizona State Will Win
This is where Eno Benjamin gets to eat.
The Sun Devil workhorse running back tore through Colorado and pounded his way for 100 yards and three touchdowns against the nasty Cal defense, and now it’s his job to control the game and the clock.
It’ll be his job to keep Gordon and company on the sidelines.
Time of possession doesn’t mean much to either side, but in this, Arizona State has to keep it from getting into a shootout. That starts with hammering a Wazzu run defense that’s not bad, but allowed multiple touchdowns in each of the last four games. It’ll get hit for at least four yards per carry.
This is a very careful, very solid team that doesn’t turn the ball over – just four giveaways – and it’s going to dominate the field position battle. ASU has a fantastic punting game, and Wazzu is 124th in the nation in punting.

What’s Going To Happen
Arizona State is going to go all Utah on Washington State.
The running game will be physical, the offense will own third downs – Wazzu allowed teams to convert half of their tries in three of the five games – and the defense will do just enough at home to allow yards, but not points.
It’ll be an interesting contrast in styles with the Sun Devils taking over to control the tempo throughout.
