Washington remains in 2nd place in NFC East despite loss, 2-6 record

The Washington Football Team fell to 2-6 on the season Sunday after a 23-20 loss to the New York Giants. The end result might have said one thing, but it was a tough and largely ugly game for Washington, who fell behind 20-3 in the first half and used a couple of second-half scores to get back and make it a competitive game.

Despite the loss to NY, who was 1-7 coming into this game, Washington remains in second place in the NFC East, trailing only the Philadelphia Eagles, who were on a bye this week. Here are the current standings and results from this week:

  1. Philadelphia Eagles: 3-4-1 (Bye)
  2. Washington Football Team: 2-6 (L, 23-20)
  3. Dallas Cowboys: 2-7 (L, 24-19)
  4. New York Giants: 2-7 (W, 23-20)

The next few weeks are going to be incredibly important when it comes to the race for the NFC East. Though the Eagles are currently in the lead, 1.5 games ahead of Washington, their schedule coming up poses some tough roads ahead, while Washington faces a number of winnable games. Philly has games against the Browns, Seahawks, Packers, Saints, and Cardinals in the next several weeks, while Washington will face the Lions, Bengals, Cowboys, and 49ers.

Ron Rivera admitted on Sunday after the loss that they will see how the team fares over this next stretch of games and get a better feeling for what their chances are to make the playoffs, or whether it might be better to try and secure a higher draft pick. At this point in time, it’s hard to decide which is the better option if you’re a fan watching, as both routes seem to have a lot of downside attached.
