Washington, QB Taylor Heinicke agree to two-year extension

The Washington Football Team was impressed enough by quarterback Taylor Heinicke in the postseason to give him a new contract.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Football Team and Heinicke have agreed to a two-year extension worth $8.75 on Wednesday. It’s an incentive-based deal for the 27-year-old:

Due to a string of QB-related circumstances, Heinicke ended up starting in the postseason for Washington against the eventual Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In that outing the Bucs took a 31-23 win, but Heinicke was 26-for-44 passing with 306 yards. He had two total touchdowns and an interception as well.

After cutting former first-round pick Dwayne Haskins and injury issues to Alex Smith, Heinicke was pushed into the postseason spotlight after only signing with the team a few weeks prior. While Haskins has since gone on to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Smith’s future in Washington remains unclear, but he is under contract for 2021.

Stay tuned to Washington Wire for the latest updates on the Football Team’s quarterbacks throughout the offseason.
