Robert Griffin III’s departure from Washington has appeared a foregone conclusion for some time but the team’s president all but confirmed the end is near for the quarterback on Tuesday.
During an interview with XEPRS-AM Bruce Allen said Griffin’s future is elsewhere. “I see Robert getting an opportunity with another team,” Allen said. “We’ve heard from some teams that are interested. I think he’s going to have a choice of a couple teams that will let him excel in the future.”
Griffin was the third-string quarterback last season in Washington as Kirk Cousins led his team to the playoffs but Allen had praise for RG III’s demeanour as a back-up. “From the very beginning Robert has handled himself as a professional,” Allen said. “From when we first drafted him all the way through he’s been a good teammate and a good guy. I know some people on the outside always like to be critical, but his team-mates like him, his coaches like him, he does have some special talents and we wish him well.”
Griffin’s release will free up cap space for Washington, and the team have until 9 March to release him. Cousins, the man who replaced Griffin, is now the future in Washington and Allen said both sides were working towards a long-term deal. “Kirk said he wants to be a Redskin and we want him to be ... so these things usually work themselves out about this time or in the next few weeks, so we’re pretty confident with that,” Allen said
