Washington needs a new starting QB, but it may not be Dwayne Haskins

Jay Gruden said on Monday night that the Washington Redskins didn’t plan on making a change at the quarterback position after their embarrassing 31-15 loss to the Chicago Bears on national television. Case Keenum turned the ball over five times, and the Redskins went through the game without many answers on either side of the ball.

While Gruden may not be right, it’s also possible that if there is a QB change, it’s not the QB Washington fans are hoping to see. Now is the time to remember Colt McCoy.

McCoy has been the backup in Washington for a while now, and he has spent the offseason rehabbing from a broken leg suffered in December of last year. At long last, he is nearing full strength, and there are some rumors that he could start practicing at full-speed this week. While fans chanted the name of rookie Dwayne Haskins in D.C. on Monday night, they have to wait longer to see him, and that’s okay.

It’s apparent that Haskins is not ready, yet. The Redskins drafted him with the No. 15 pick knowing that they would have to put a lot of work in to get him feeling comfortable running the offense.

If McCoy is deployed before Haskins, that wouldn’t be the worst thing. McCoy has shown in his career that he has the skills to act as a serviceable backup, and he could be the perfect band-aid in the event that the rookie needs a few more games to mature. Of course, all of this is for not, if the Redskins decide to keep Keenum at the helm.

However, if a QB change is made, don’t be surprised if it’s not the young-gun whose name is called.
