The Washington Nationals won the World Series for the first time in franchise history after beating the Houston Astros on the road in Wednesday night’s game-seven decider.
A to-and-fro series ended with a come-from-behind 6-2 victory for the Nationals at Houston’s Minute Maid Park.
Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg - the No1 overall pick in the 2009 MLB draft - was named the most valuable player after his winning efforts in games two and six helped to secure the prize.
"Through all the adversity I think I've learned a lot about myself," Strasburg, who has overcome injury troubles over recent years, told reporters.
"When you have the ups and downs, I think you can learn just as much from the downs as you can the ups.
"And I think everything happens for a reason. I think I've really just become a stronger pitcher through all the adversity that I've had to go through."
