Washington loses bid to host 2024 NFL draft

The 2024 NFL draft will be heading on the road to Detroit, the NFL announced Monday. Last week, the NFL chose Kansas City as the host city for the 2023 NFL draft over Green Bay and Washington.

It’s a big win for the city of Detroit, on a day which the Lions were also chosen for the 2022 edition of “Hard Knocks.”

Detroit Lions president Rod Wood spoke to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press about what this means for the city:

I think it’s unlikely, I will never say never, that we’ll have another chance for a Super Bowl, but the draft has become maybe the next biggest event that the league puts on. And so once the draft started to move around and was so successful in other markets, it became something that we really focused on and so happy that it’s finally happened and hopefully we’ll put on a good enough show that maybe they will consider us for a Super Bowl again.

It was unclear exactly where the draft would’ve been held in Washington, but presumably somewhere in the city, not in Maryland or Virginia.

As for the region’s football team — the Commanders — the focus now turns fully to finding a new stadium.
