Washington DC shooting latest: Elias Rodriguez charged with first-degree murder of Israeli Embassy couple

Jewish organizations in Washington, D.C. are reviewing security protocols at synagogues and other institutions, in the wake of the fatal shooting of two Israeli embassy staffers Wednesday night.

Ron Halber, chief executive officer of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington, said that local law enforcement has increased patrols around Jewish institutions in Washington since the killings.

“A lot of us are looking over our shoulder today,” Halber told Reuters. “But we have to keep leading proud open Jewish lives.”

The two victims were named as Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim, a couple who were engaged. Lischinski's coffin arrived back in Israel on Friday, per ABC.

Chicago man Elias Rodriguez, 30, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder over their killings, which took place outside of a Jewish museum in Washington, D.C.

Rodriguez chanted “free, free Palestine,” according to police, after reportedly shooting at the couple at least 21 times. Court documents show that police recovered 21 fired bullets and a 9mm handgun from the scene, CNN reported.

It has since emerged that the suspect’s father, Eric Rodriguez, was invited to President Donald Trump’s Joint Address to Congress on March 5 this year by a Democratic lawmaker.

Netanyahu lashes out at leaders of UK, France and Canada after D.C. shooting

Thursday 22 May 2025 19:06 , Oliver O'Connell

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has lashed out at the leaders of the UK, France, and Canada following last night’s shooting of two Israeli embassy staffers in Washington, D.C.

The prime minister said that pushing for a Palestinian state in the wake of Israel’s war on Gaza, as proposed by those countries, would side with Hamas and reward them with “the ultimate prize.”

His remarks echo those of Amichai Chikli, Israel’s minister for the diaspora and combating antisemitism, who accused UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer of “emboldening the forces of terror” that led to the fatal shooting.

Netanyahu posted an eight-minute video to social media on Thursday.

Shooting suspect posted online manifesto: report

Thursday 22 May 2025 20:05 , Rachel Dobkin

A manifesto was posted on social media last night from an account that belonged to the suspected shooter of the two Israeli embassy staffers who were killed in Washington, D.C., the New York Times reports.

Elias Rodriguez, 31, appeared in federal court in Washington on Thursday in a white jail suit and listened impassively as charges and possible punishments, which include the death penalty, were read.

Rodriguez faces charges of murder of foreign officials and other crimes and did not enter a plea during a perfunctory court appearance.

Additional charges are likely, prosecutors said, as authorities continue to investigate the killings as both a hate crime against the Jewish community and terrorism.

Charging documents provided chilling new details of Wednesday night’s attack, revealing Rodriguez shouted "Free Palestine" as he was led away after his arrest.

Federal authorities said that Rodriguez told police after his arrest, "I did it for Palestine, I did it for Gaza.”

Jeanine Pirro, the interim U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, said: "Violence against anyone based on their religion is an act of cowardice. It is not an act of a hero.

"Antisemitism will not be tolerated, especially in the nation's capital."

In March, Garcia described Rodriguez as “an outspoken advocate against attacks on veterans’ services and the rights of unionized federal employees,” according to the Post.

In a statement at the time, the Democrat continued: “Eric represents the very best of our community — someone who has served his country, continues to serve his fellow veterans and fights every day to protect the dignity of working people.”

On Thursday Rodriguez’s son Elias was charged with two counts of first degree murder over the deaths of Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim.

Garcia condemned the “horrible, senseless act of antisemitism” earlier in the day.

Israeli ambassador to U.S. says 'stop delegitimizing us' following shooting

Friday 23 May 2025 12:18 , Rachel Clun

Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Yechiel Leiter said the fatal shooting of two staff members, Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim,” was part of an international move to “delegitimize and demonize Israel”.

“We're called the worst kinds of names. Our prime minister is called a war criminal. All of our soldiers are referred to in such derogatory fashion,” he said in an interview with PBS on Thursday.

Asked what he thought was causing this sort of hate, Leiter said it was “the demonization of the state of Israel, the attempt to say that we are interlopers or colonizers or occupiers, that we don't really belong.”

Leiter said global leaders including Sir Keir Starmer and Emmanuel Macron had explaining to do over their criticisms of Israel’s blockade of humanitarian aid into Gaza.

“Stop beating up on Israel. Stop condemning us. Stop delegitimizing us. We're not doing anything that is comparable to what we're being charged with doing,” he said.

Yaron Lischinsky remembered as 'a truth-seeking type of person, very, very kind'

Friday 23 May 2025 14:15 , Joe Sommerlad

Ron Prosor, a veteran Israeli diplomat who knew Yaron Lischinsky, said that he and Sarah Milgrim were “a young couple with a bright future, planning their life together.”

More details about the Lischinsky and Milgrim are continuing to emerge, with the former reported to have grown up partly in the German city of Nuremberg and moved to Israel at 16.

He then served in the Jewish state’s military “and chose to dedicate his life to the state of Israel,” said Prosor, who taught Lischinsky at Israel’s Reichman University, where he earned a master’s degree in government, diplomacy and strategy.

“He embodied the Judeo-Christian values and set an example for young people worldwide,” Prosor said on X.

A friend, David Boskey, recalled Lischinsky as someone unafraid to broach hard questions in order to interrogate his own convictions, hailing him as a “mensch.”

“He was looking to see where he was going to go in life, asking questions about calling and about identity and about what he was going to study, where he was going to work, what he wanted to pursue in life,” Boskey said, describing Lischinsky as “a truth-seeking type of person, mixed with a very, very kind and gracious willingness to serve other people.”

Lischinsky helped found the Israeli-German Society’s youth forum, according to its counterpart in Germany, and took a job at the Israeli Embassy in Washington in 2022.

There, he worked as a research assistant whose responsibilities included keeping track of important events and trends in the Middle East and North Africa, his LinkedIn profile said.

He said he advocated for interfaith dialogue and intercultural understanding and was an “ardent believer’ in deepening Israel's ties with the Arab world through the U.S.-brokered agreements known as the Abraham Accords.

On Instagram, his bio included a yellow ribbon symbolizing the struggle to free the hostages taken by Hamas during its October 7 2023, attack on southern Israel that ignited the war in the Gaza Strip.

Sarah Milgrim ‘was filled with so much love,’ says rabbi

Friday 23 May 2025 14:35 , Joe Sommerlad

Milgrim was an American citizen who hailed from Overland Park, Kansas, where a former youth director at Congregation Beth Torah remembers a brilliant girl with a perpetual smile and a sense of purpose.

“She had a passion for Judaism and for Israel, and she wanted to do some good,” said Marcia Rittmaster, the former youth director. She recommended Milgrim for a Jewish leadership internship upon the young woman's graduation from high school.

Milgrim went on to the University of Kansas, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies in 2021 and was a warm, uplifting presence at Shabbat dinners and holiday gatherings at the Chabad Center for Jewish Life.

“She believed in connections, in building community and bringing people together,” Rabbi Zalman Tiechtel said. He said she loved asking questions, enjoyed insightful conversations and “was filled with so much love.”

After graduating, Milgrim worked at a Tel Aviv-based organization centered on technology training and conflict dialogue for young Palestinians and Israelis, according to her LinkedIn profile.

It said she had been trained in religious engagement and peacebuilding by the United States Institute of Peace, an organization that promotes conflict resolution and was created by the U.S. Congress.

After earning a master’s degree in international affairs from American University in 2023, she went to work at the Israeli Embassy, where her job involved organizing events and missions to Israel.

A standing-room only crowd gathered for a vigil for Milgrim in her hometown Thursday night.

Her college roommate related how her friend was an animal lover who faithfully walked her dog, took care of her pet rabbit and was a member of the beekeeping club. She was a passionate advocate for the environment, Amanda Birger said.

“She was very tactful about how she used her voice, which sometimes came off as cautious,” Birger said. “But when it looked like wasn't speaking up, it's because she was trying to keep the peace.”

She was “the ultimate peacemaker in her personal life and her professional life,” Birger said.

Milgrim held her Jewish values dear and showed Birger how someone their age could live a joyful Jewish life.

“She stood so proudly in her Judaism. She wore it with a smile, happily educating anyone who asked about it. She made me want to be more Jewish,” Birger said.

Father of alleged shooter was invited to Trump address by Democrat in March

Friday 23 May 2025 16:35 , Oliver O'Connell

The father of the man charged over the shooting deaths of two Israeli embassy staffers was invited to President Donald Trump’s joint address in March by a Democratic lawmaker, according to reports.

“Eric Rodriguez was our guest during the President’s Joint Speech to Congress, but we don’t know his family,” Illinois Representative Jesus “Chuy” Garcia told the New York Post.

Sarah Milgrim and Yaron Lischinsky were in the “prime of their lives” when they were gunned down outside Washington, D.C.’s Capital Jewish Museum.

The young couple, who worked at the Israeli embassy in the capital, were leaving an event Wednesday night hosted by the American Jewish Committee when they were confronted by a gunman, who fired at “close range.”

Lischinsky, a 30-year-old diplomat, was just days away from proposing to 26-year-old Milgrim, a colleague at the embassy who grew up in Kansas.

FBI investigates text allegedly written by murder suspect

Friday 23 May 2025 19:55 , Rachel Clun, AP

The FBI and police are investigating texts that have been attributed to Elias Rodriguez, who was charged with murder on Thursday over the shooting deaths of two Israeli embassy staff.

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino posted on social media that investigators were "aware of certain writings allegedly authored by the suspect" and hoped to soon have updates regarding their authenticity.

Bongino's statement appeared to refer to a manifesto signed with Elias Rodriguez's name that was posted to an anonymous X account on Wednesday night shortly before the shooting.

Posted with the title “Escalate For Gaza, Bring The War Home,” it condemned Israel's killing of tens of thousands of Palestinians since the October 2023 Hamas attacks, and discussed the morality of “armed” action.

“In the wake of an act people look for a text to fix its meaning so here's an attempt,” the document read. “The atrocities committed by Israelis against Palestine defy description and defy quantification.”

Rodriguez's online posts had become fixated on war in Gaza

Friday 23 May 2025 20:16 , AP

Rodriguez lived in a modest 850-square-foot apartment on Chicago’s north side and worked as an administrative assistant at a medical trade group. He had no apparent criminal record.

In his activism, he protested police violence against minorities and the power of corporations. His online posts had recently become fixated on the war in Gaza, calling for retaliation against Israel.

In the window of his apartment hung a photo of Wadee Alfayoumi, a 6-year-old Muslim boy killed in a stabbing in Chicago shortly after the start of the war, which was sparked by the Oct. 7, 2023, attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas that resulted in the deaths of some 1,200 people in Israel, mostly civilians, and the abductions of 251 others.

A neighbor, John Wayne Fry, told reporters that Rodriguez and a woman who lived with him appeared to be “very sensitive people, especially about the issue of Palestine.”

Shooter 'fired 21 bullets' at couple in Washington DC

Friday 23 May 2025 20:25 , Oliver O'Connell

New details are emerging about the fatal shooting of two Israeli embassy staffers in Washington, D.C.

Police recovered 21 fired bullets from the scene, CNN reported court documents as saying, suggesting the couple were fired at at least 21 times.

He had purchased the fun recovered from the crime scene in March 2020 in Illinois, the ATF discovered. While allegedly flying from Chicago to Washington, D.C., Elias Rodrigues - the suspect who has been charged - declared a firearm in his checked bag, according to court documents.

Social media post on night of shooting railed against death toll in Gaza

Friday 23 May 2025 20:35 , AP

Social media accounts tied to Rodriguez suggest he had become increasingly focused over the last two years on the Israeli bombing campaign and ground invasion in Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of more than 53,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not differentiate between civilians and combatants in its count.

An account on X that used a variation of a screen name Rodriguez had used on other sites, along with his given name and photo, frequently featured pro-Palestinian posts, including a video from an October 2023 protest in downtown Chicago against U.S. aid to Israel.

Last October, the account also reposted two videos of speeches by Hassan Nasrallah, a Lebanese cleric and a former leader of Islamic militant group Hezbollah. Nasrallah had been killed two weeks earlier in an Israeli airstrike.

Less than an hour after the shooting in Washington on Thursday night, the X account posted, “Escalate For Gaza, Bring The War Home,” along with screen grabs of a nearly 1,000-word essay signed with Rodriguez’s name. It was not immediately clear whether Rodriguez, who was in police custody at the time, had used a feature on X to schedule the release of the post in advance or if another person might have had access to the account.

In the piece, Rodriguez railed against the mounting death toll in Gaza, saying Israel “had obliterated the capacity to even continue counting the dead, which has served its genocide well.”

He sought to justify what he called “the morality of armed demonstration.”

“The atrocities committed by Israelis against Palestine defy description and defy quantification,” he wrote.

Rodriguez also invoked the death last year of Aaron Bushnell, an active-duty member of the U.S. Air Force who set himself ablaze outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington while declaring that he “will no longer be complicit in genocide.”

Israel has repeatedly denied that it is committing genocide in Gaza.

EDITORIAL: Israel is steadily destroying trust with much of the West

Friday 23 May 2025 21:25 , The Independent

Benjamin Netanyahu’s attack on the leaders of Britain, Canada and France for having the temerity to ask for adequate humanitarian aid for people in Gaza is as offensive as it is absurd.

The very notion that Sir Keir Starmer, Mark Carney and Emmanuel Macron are supporting the gangsters and terrorists of Hamas, “emboldening” its leaders to launch more 7 October-style attacks, is simply beneath contempt.

Mr Netanyahu, illogically, claims that just because Hamas welcomed the calls for a ceasefire and free access for food and medicines, that makes the UK, Canada and France the loyal allies of Hamas.

Or, as Mr Netanyahu put it in his broadcast: “I say to President Macron, Prime Minister Carney and Prime Minister Starmer, when mass murderers, rapists, baby killers and kidnappers thank you, you’re on the wrong side of justice.”

No, Mr Netanyahu – these leaders are on the side of human life and human rights, and, by the way, for the right of the state of Israel to exist and live in peace with its neighbours. The British, French and Canadian governments do not sponsor antisemitic terror, and they’ve roundly condemned the murders of Israeli diplomats in Washington.

Yaron Lischinsky remembered as 'a truth-seeking type of person, very, very kind'

Friday 23 May 2025 21:46 , Oliver O'Connell

Friday 23 May 2025 22:05 , Oliver O'Connell

Just as Israel seemed on the brink of losing some of its most durable diplomatic support, the killing of two Israeli diplomats in Washington DC could have the effect of calling that shift into question, or at least putting it on hold, Mary Dejevsky writes:
