Washington CB Byron Murphy expected to be top pick in 2nd round

The Arizona Cardinals, barring a trade, will make the first selection of the second round of the NFL draft Friday afternoon. There are a number of quality players on the board. General manager Steve Keim said multiple players have a first-round grade and coach Kliff Kingsbury revealed there are players they rated in the top 15.

Based on a couple of reports, they are expected to select Washington cornerback Byron Murphy with the 33rd overall pick.

It was suggested by ESPN’s Chris Mortenson.

Local radio host John Gambadoro also expects it.

Murphy played high school ball in Arizona, so he has local ties and would keep with the offseason theme of adding hometown players.

He is versatile, able to play outside and in the slot. The Cardinals currently do not have a clear candidate to play nickel corner this year.

Many would like to see the Cardinals draft an offensive lineman or receiver, but Murphy was expected to be selected as high as the top half of the first round in multiple mock drafts. He would fill a need and be a good fit.
