Washington boxer Pat McCormack wins silver medal at 2020 Olympics

There was disappointment for North East boxer Pat McCormack at the Tokyo Olympics after the 26-year-old was defeated in the final of the Men's welterweight.

Washington -born McCormack encountered a tough fight against Cuba's Roniel Iglesias, who secured his second Olympic gold in a unanimous decision victory.

But there is still plenty to be proud about for McCormack, who will of course bring home a silver medal after reaching the final.

The fight was closely contested, with both men landing some good shots throughout.

McCormack did hit the canvas in the second round, but the judge ruled it as a slip despite Iglesias landing a blow.

In the end, judges called all three rounds for Iglesias, and McCormack was unable to find the decisive blow to knock his opponent out.

McCormack made the final after his scheduled semi-final opponent Aidan Walsh was forced to withdraw due to injury. He had previously bested Uzbekistan's Bobo Baturov in the quarter-final.

Hailing from Birtley Amateur Boxing Club, Pat and twin brother Luke have made no secret of their intention to shed their amateur vests after the Tokyo Games to turn professional.

Luke exited the Tokyo Olympics following defeat to Cuban two-time world champion Andy Cruz in the last-16 of the men's lightweight tournament on Saturday.
