Washington benches Dwayne Haskins, Giants QB Daniel Jones' 2019 first-round NFL draft classmate

Daniel Jones' offense is struggling, but at least the Giants haven't benched him.

Division rival Washington on Wednesday demoted Jones' classmate, fellow first-round pick Dwayne Haskins, in favor of backup Kyle Allen.

Washington also is elevating third-string veteran Alex Smith over Haskins to be Allen's backup.

This continues Smith's remarkable recovery from a gruesome and career-threatening leg injury in 2018. But the headline is that Haskins, the 15th overall pick out of Ohio State in 2019, is now buried on coach Ron Rivera's depth chart.

Washington (19.8), the Jets (16.3) and the Giants (11.8) are the only three NFL teams averaging fewer than 20 points per game through four weeks.

Washington does have one win and has been a touchdown better per game than the Giants and Jones, the Giants' sixth overall pick in 2019 out of Duke.

But FootballOutsiders.com ranks Haskins as the worst of 33 NFL quarterbacks who have thrown a minimum of 60 passes so far. The football data and statistics website measures its quarterback rating for Haskins at 30.6.

For context, the Packers' Aaron Rodgers is a league-high 92.8. Jones comes in at 46.9, ahead only of the Eagles' Carson Wentz (45.1), the Broncos' Jeff Driskel (39.1), the Niners' Nick Mullens (39.1) and Haskins. The Jets' Sam Darnold is just ahead of Jones at 46.9.

Haskins' DVOA, or defense-adjusted value over average, which measures play by play efficiency taking opponents into account, is -33.8% (Rodgers leads the league at 44.3%). But Haskins' DVOA is higher than Jones' -42.0%, which is second-to-last ahead of only Wentz (-54.1%).

Haskins, 23, is 89 of 146 for 939 yards with 61% completion, four TDs, three interceptions and one lost fumble. He is averaging 6.4 yards per attempt, has been sacked 13 times, fumbled four times, and has rushed 13 times for 30 yards.

Jones, 23, is 91 of 149 for 889 yards with 61.1% completion, two TDs, five interceptions and one lost fumble. He is averaging 6.0 yards per attempt, has been sacked 14 times, fumbled three times, and has rushed 18 times for 137 yards.

The Giants are scheduled to host Washington in Week 5 after this weekend's trip to face the Dallas Cowboys. They could end up facing Allen or Smith.
