Washing machine mistake you've been making with your jeans, according to experts

You might think that washing your clothes is pretty straightforward, but speak to any expert and you'll probably change your mind.

Each garment's washing instructions can vary - for instance, did you know you're not meant to use fabric softener when washing pyjamas?

One other item that requires very specific care is jeans and according to experts if you're not washing them properly, you could be ruining them.

This is because washing jeans too often can cause them to fade, as the product team from Lee Jeans recently explained to Metro.co.uk.

They said: "As a general rule: The less you wash dyed jeans, the better.

"Washing jeans too often can cause them to fade prematurely."

Susan Fermor, from stain removal experts, Dr Beckmann seconded this, advising people to wash their jeans on a cool wash once a month - so long as they are keeping them clean the rest of the time.

Chip Bergh, the CEO, Levi Strauss & Co agrees with this advice.

In an interview with Fortune, he admitted that his jeans had "never seen the inside of a washing machine".

Instead, he claimed he "spot cleans" stains with a toothbrush.

He added: "We go into autopilot and after we've finished wearing something, we just automatically toss it into the laundry.

"A good pair of denim doesn't really need to be washed in the washing machine - except for very infrequently or rarely."

Now, obviously if you're wearing your jeans and being very active, getting hot and sweaty, you're going to want to wash them more frequently.

But the message here is clear - try and avoid washing them just for the sake of it, only do it when it's necessary.
