Washing machine 5 meters in air shocking reminder of west Japan floods

KURASHIKI, Okayama -- I couldn't believe my eyes. A washing machine was hanging from the top of a utility pole. The height seemed to be about 5 meters.

It was July 14 when I passed a man on a street in the Mabi area in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture. A river had flooded there because of the recent torrential rain that had hit western Japan. The man said to me, "Come over here and see this." I looked up to where he pointed to find the unusual object.

About a week had passed since the disaster hit the area and the muddy water had mostly receded. The Yata district in Mabi was one of the areas most severely damaged by flooding as water reportedly had inundated the second floor of houses.

"This place was completely submerged," the man said.
