Washburn: Still unclear if Malcolm Brogdon is over failed trade

Before the Boston Celtics sent Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies as part of the Kristaps Porzingis deal, Malcolm Brogdon was being floated in trade talks. The original reporting surrounding Boston’s move for the Washington Wizards big man involved Brogdon joining the Los Angeles Clippers as part of a three-team deal.

However, the Clippers pulled out at the last minute due to concerns over Brogdon’s elbow injury that hindered him during the Eastern Conference Finals. Since then, there have been concerns regarding the 2023 Sixth Man of the Year‘s mindset about staying in Boston. Joe Mazzulla spoke about a “healing process.” Fans have discussed potentially finding another deal to move on from the impressive guard. Yet, as things stand, Brogdon is set to remain with the Celtics for the upcoming season.

According to Gary Washburn, who was speaking on a recent episode of “Celtics Beat,” Brogdon is “angry with the team.”

“Malcolm is the one I’m concerned about, too, because we’ve heard nothing,” Washburn said. “And he’s angry with the team. So, I don’t think communication between the two sides has been fruitful. So he could just say, Listen, man, I’m not, I’m getting no surgery. I’m just gonna let this heal, and you’ve just got to wait for me to let it heal. It could be somewhat of a protest for being on the trade block or some I don’t know, but you would think that that wouldn’t be the case. But we’ll see October 2, when they and then or that October 3, when it first practices like, actually, who’s on the floor?”

Brogdon’s presence on Boston’s bench makes them an extremely difficult team to deal with. The veteran guard allows the Celtics to have multiple difference-makers on the floor at all times, regardless of which star talents have gone to the bench.

Nevertheless, Mazzulla and Brad Stevens will certainly need to smooth over any remaining ill feelings regarding Brogdon’s failed trade. Otherwise, there could be some locker room unrest to begin the season, and for a contending team, that’s the last thing they need.
