Was Joe Flacco worse than Case Keenum over the last two years?

After the Broncos agreed to trade for Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco on Wednesday, some fans and pundits questioned on Twitter whether he would be much of an upgrade over Case Keenum.

The raw numbers over the last two years seem to suggest Flacco hasn’t been any better than Keenum:

That’s not a completely fair comparison, though, because Keenum has appeared in 31 games over the last two years, compared to 25 for Flacco, who missed several games with a hip injury and lost his job to Lamar Jackson. Still, this isn’t a great sign.

From a bigger picture, Flacco doesn’t look much better, unfortunately. Here are their side-by-side stats in career starts:

There is one stat where Flacco is significantly better than Keenum: the postseason. Flacco is an established veteran with a 10-5 record in the playoffs. Keenum is a journeyman QB with a 1-1 playoff record.

Flacco may not be a flashy QB with big numbers, but he has proved he can take a team deep into the postseason. He’s a former Super Bowl MVP, after all. The raw numbers aren’t wildly encouraging, though.
