Warrnambool beach closed after large shark spotted near Flume surf break

A south-west Victorian beach has been closed following a confirmed shark sighting.

The Warrnambool Surf Lifesaving Club closed the beach after one of its members confirmed a shark sighing at the Flume surf break, near Lady Bay.

The club says the species of shark is unknown but it is believed to be about 2.5 metres in length.

As a result, the Warrnambool beach has been closed between the breakwater and the surf spot known as Granny's Grave.

The club said the beach was closed out of an abundance of caution, following advice from the Victorian Fisheries Association.

"Whilst it is extremely rare for sharks to be seen in Lady Bay, we advise swimmers and beach goers to use extreme caution — particularly around the Hopkins river mouth," the club advised in a statement.

The confirmed sighting follows multiple unconfirmed sightings at the southern right whale nursery, Logan's Beach, across the weekend.

The club said it would continue to monitor the situation closely.
