Warriors sending Damian Jones, draft pick to Hawks for Omari Spellman

The Golden State Warriors continue their offseason overhaul after losing superstar Kevin Durant to the Brooklyn Nets in a sign-and-trade for D’Angelo Russell, DeMarcus Cousins to the Los Angeles Lakers, and sending away Andre Iguodala to the Memphis Grizzlies.

On Monday, they made another move. According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, they have sent young Damian Jones along with a second round draft pick to the Atlanta Hawks for equally as young Omari Spellman.

Jones averaged 3.6 points and 2.3 rebounds in 49 career games in three seasons with Golden State. He started 22 of the 24 games he played in before suffering a torn pectoral muscle in December that cost him a huge part of the season.

Spellman had a promising rookie season with the Hawks averaging 5.9 points and 4,2 rebounds in 46 games with 11 starts before he suffered an injury of is own. He went through a left ankle injury in March that essentially ended his season.

In this trade, the Warriors do get a little younger as they get a guy in Spellman who is two years younger than Jones. The moves to bring in Willie Cauley-Stein and bring back Kevon Looney probably sealed Jones’ fate as well.
