Warriors Rewind: Lucas, Portman and Thurmond tally double-doubles in win vs. Buffalo

In the San Francisco Warriors’ 106-100 win over the visiting Buffalo Braves, three players recorded double-doubles in balanced scoring and rebounding efforts that resulted in victory:

  • Jerry Lucas — 20 points, 11 rebounds
  • Bob Portman — 20 points, 10 rebounds
  • Nate Thurmond — 17 points, 12 rebounds

In the losing effort, Dick Garrett scored a game-high 27 points for the Braves and Don May recorded a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

And, so it went on Jan. 29, 1971 at San Francisco Civic Auditorium when the Warriors played their last game in San Francisco before crossing the bay for Oakland. Come this time next year, the Warriors will be heading toward the home stretch of the franchise’s first season in San Francisco in forty-eight years, with Golden State calling the brand-new Chase Center home.

It was announced this week that the team will open the 2019-20 preseason against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Although many believe Oakland and Oracle Arena are home to the Warriors, the franchise will be returning to its beginnings by playing once again in San Francisco — albeit, a very different and much more expensive city than it once was.

For the record:

The San Francisco Warriors finished the 1970-71 season second in the Pacific Division behind a 41-41 record. The Warriors made the playoffs, but were bounced by the Milwaukee Bucks in the Western Conference Semifinals, 4-1.
