Warriors' Klay Thompson expresses difficulty with changing role on team

Basketball fans were left surprised and concerned when Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson was left out of the closing lineup in their recent victory against the Brooklyn Nets. This marks the second time in three games that Thompson, deemed a future Hall of Famer, has been benched during crucial moments of the game. Understandably, the sharpshooter admitted that it has been challenging to accept this change in his role.

Thompson's absence from the closing lineup was evident as he finished the game with a less than stellar performance, going 4-for-9 from the field, including 0-for-3 from behind the arc. It was undoubtedly a frustrating experience for the typically reliable shooter, who had to watch from the bench as the game unfolded.

The decision to keep Thompson out of the closing lineup was a surprise, especially considering that rookie Gui Santos, who had minimal NBA experience, was given the opportunity to play in key moments. Warriors coach Steve Kerr explained that he chose to stick with Santos and a group of young players because they were competing well and had the momentum. However, Kerr acknowledged that this season has been difficult for Thompson, who has battled injuries and the natural challenges of aging.

Thompson's recent struggles can be attributed to his recovery from a series of significant injuries. He suffered a torn ACL during Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals, followed by a torn Achilles a year later. These injuries sidelined him for two consecutive seasons. Despite his remarkable return to help the Warriors secure the 2022 NBA title, Thompson's numbers have dipped this season. He is currently averaging 17.1 points per game, his lowest since his second NBA season, and shooting career-worst percentages from the field and behind the arc.

Thompson, who turns 34 this week, maintained that he feels physically strong but admits that the mental aspect has been more challenging. Despite his own frustrations, Thompson expressed happiness for his young teammates who have stepped up and contributed to the team's success. He applauded the performances of players like Jonathan Kuminga, Brandin Podziemski, and particularly Gui Santos, who impressed in his limited NBA opportunities.

Santos, a 21-year-old rookie from Brazil, has displayed tremendous potential and made a significant impact in recent games. He played with immense energy and contributed defensively, earning praise from both Thompson and coach Kerr. Santos, drafted as the 55th overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft, has seen an increase in playing time over the past few games and has proven himself to be a valuable contributor to the team.

The Warriors' entire season has been filled with unexpected developments, and they currently find themselves in 12th place in the competitive Western Conference. As they strive to climb the conference standings, they must also come to terms with Thompson's fluctuating role within the team. It is a delicate balancing act between honoring Thompson's previous contributions and adjusting for the present team dynamics.

Thompson's teammate and Warriors leader, Stephen Curry, understands the challenge. He believes Thompson's desire to improve his shooting and frustration with his role is only natural for a player of his caliber. Curry emphasized the need for everyone to adapt as they navigate the later stages of their careers. He encouraged Thompson to stay positive, remain ready, and trust that things will eventually turn around.

As the Warriors enter the final third of the season, they face the arduous task of climbing the conference standings while simultaneously managing the evolving dynamics within the team. The situation with Thompson's role will continue to be closely monitored by fans and analysts alike, hoping to see the sharpshooter regain his form and contribute to the Warriors' pursuit of success.
