For the 15th year, NBA Summer League will tip off in early July to showcase the talents of still-developing players while preparing them for the rigors of professional play.
For the Golden State Warriors, that means competing in the California Classic from July 1 to July 3 before things get started in earnest in Las Vegas.
After gobbling grilled meat and fixings on Independence Day, the Warriors will tip off in Summer League action beginning on July 5 at 9 p.m. ET against the Charlotte Hornets (NBA TV).
Stephen Curry’s Warriors, which he helped catapult into the legends and lore of NBA history, will face his hometown Hornets. This seems fitting and it is hard to accept this as accidental. With any hopes, this matchup is a hint that the basketball superstar will make an appearance at the event.
Second-year shooting guard Jacob Evans, following a lackluster rookie season, will be shoring up his skills during the two-week event. Joining him will be undrafted forward Dedric Lawson out of Kansas.
Alfonzo McKinnie is expected to work out with the team at Summer League, but he is not expected to play, which seems fitting for a guy who came up big — in the biggest moments — for a team increasingly beleaguered by injuries during the playoffs.
McKinnie didn’t see much time on the court during the postseason, just 10 minutes per game, and his 3.0 points and 1.3 rebounds per game are misleading. McKinnie made timely buckets during the postseason, often from beyond the arc, to energize his team and shift momentum.
In the regular season, McKinnie played in 72 games — starting in five of them — with averages of 4.7 points and 3.4 rebounds in 13.9 minutes per game. He finished the 2018-19 season with a commanding 48.7 field goal percentage and a respectable 35.6 percent from three-point distance.
Perhaps McKinnie can work on his free throws at Summer League, though. During the regular season, he made just 56.3 percent of his shots from the charity stripe.
