Warriors host students from Parkland shooting at shoot around in Miami

A little more than a year ago, more than a dozen students were shot and killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The tragedy shook the nation and led to even more activism around gun control in the country.

On Wednesday morning, during the Warriors shoot around, the team hosted some of the students who were affected by the shooting. When asked about it, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr talked a bit about gun control and what this younger generation of activists has been able to accomplish.

“We have to decide as a country if we’re going to do anything about it. The answer is pretty simple in my mind: yes we want to do something about it.

“Older people have been trying to do something, but we haven’t made an impact. But this next generation —  the country belongs to them. So I’m really proud of what they’re doing. They’re starting this grassroots organization, they’re starting chapters all over the country and they’re trying to do something that we should all be trying to do, which is to protect each other.

This isn’t the first time that Kerr has spoken out about gun control. Last year, he was asked about the Parkland shooting the day after the tragedy where he wondered out loud if our country could vote in enough people with the courage to move us in the direction for better gun control. Kerr also gave a pretty powerful speech in May of last year about gun control issues.

Kerr wasn’t the only one in the building interacting with the Parkland survivors. Some of the players like Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala spent some time with the kids, too.
