Warriors expect ‘substantial discussions’ over Klay Thompson extension

Klay Thompson is entering the final year of his five-year $189.9 million contract and will become an unrestricted free agent next summer. As such, the Golden State Warriors are expected to begin discussions on a potential contract extension in the coming weeks or months.

When speaking to The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami on a recent episode of ‘The TK Show,’ Warriors owner Joe Lacob revealed the Warriors front office has already held provisional discussions with Thompson’s agent. However, the front office is expecting to have more ‘substantial discussions’ in the near future as they look to tie down a core member of their rotation for the latter years of his career.

“We’ve had some very brief discussions at this point with his agent,” Lacob said. “But they’re very, very early. … I fully expect that we’ll have some substantial discussions soon sometime and we’ll see if we can’t put something together that allows Klay to be here for a long time, which we clearly would like him to be.”

Thompson will be entering his second full season since returning from two serious injuries and will be aiming to win his fifth championship ring with the Warriors.

Last season, Thompson began to flash signs that he’s getting near to his former All-Star level, as he provided the Warriors with 21.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists on 41.2% shooting from 3-point range and 47% shooting from 2-point distance.

The Warriors clearly want to keep their championship core intact as they move toward the final years of their careers. Finding a deal that makes sense for both Thompson and the franchise shouldn’t be too difficult and will ensure Golden State remains in contention for championship banners in the years to come.
