Warrington Wolves open investigation into racism allegation during victory over Leeds Rhinos

Warrington Wolves say the club “strongly condemns racism” after Leeds Rhinos prop Mikolaj Oledzki said he was racially abused during Sunday’s Super League match at Headingley.

The England prop, who was born in Poland, drew referee Chris Kendall's attention to the incident late in the game, following Harry Newman's second try.

Oledzki said he expects the Rugby Football League to investigate and Warrington said in a statement that the alleged abuse came from a Wolves fan.

The statement said: “The club is aware of allegations of racist abuse directed towards Leeds Rhinos player Mikolaj Oledzki from one of our supporters during last night’s Betfred Super League round 17 fixture.

“Warrington Wolves strongly condemns racism and discrimination and it has no place at our Club, in Rugby League or in society.

“An investigation will now take place in conjunction with Leeds Rhinos and the Rugby Football League and no further comment will be made at this stage.”

Oledzki told the Rhinos’ official website after Sunday’s game, which Warrington won 27-26: “Rugby league is a tough enough sport as it is.

“I am really disappointed because we stand so strongly against racism and discrimination.

“As a player we all expect to get a bit of abuse, but there's no need for racism or anything like that.

“We are going to leave it to the RFL to review it to see if anything can be done.

“I'm disappointed because there's lots of kids in the stand too and the remark said to me was quite loud.

“I was shocked when I heard it, I have never really experienced anything like it. It's not something I would want kids to hear.”
