Warrington couple formerly owned lorry where 39 Chinese migrants were found dead

A Warrington woman has been named by Bulgarian TV as the owner of the lorry where 39 Chinese Migrants were found dead.

Joanna Maher, 38, from Warrington , was revealed as the owner of the Scania truck that was registered in the Bulgarian Black Sea port of Varna in 2018.

But Mrs Maher and her Haulage boss husband Thomas last night insisted they a year ago to a company in Ireland - reports Mail Online.

She said: "We did own it but sold it 13 months ago. It's the cab - my name was down as owning it."

They claim they sold it to a company in County Monaghan, close to where truck driver Mo Robinson, 25, lives.

Mr Maher said he sold it on 3 October last year and said the couple owned it for just a year.

Thomas said: "It's disgusting what's happened.

"I went to the British police as we were the registered owners in Bulgaria. I phoned them myself.

"They were happy we had come forward. They are well aware of who they are dealing with.

"It's not nice to be associated with this. We're shocked."

Mrs Maher registered the vehicle at a run down 10-storey building in the seaside resort of Varna.

The lorry which carried the refrigerated unit holding 39 bodies left the day after it was registered and has never been back to Bulgaria.

Bulgarian officials believe that there may be no other connection to the country, other than the PO Box and registration certificate.

One resident of the number seven building in Varna told the Mail Online: "There have been many, many companies using that small office for business here.

"It is locked up now. I have never seen anybody there.

"The letters used to be put up against the wall and somebody would have to come and collect them.

"It has been secured and is disused."
